Momentum

Momentum is an in-play metric designed to capture attacking pressure as a match unfolds. It helps you understand which team is pushing the game forward and how sustained that pressure is over time.

Unlike statistics such as goals or corners, momentum is not cumulative.

It rises and falls as the game evolves. A team can dominate for 10 minutes, lose momentum, and later regain control.

When Momentum is high, it usually means a team is spending extended periods in the opponent’s half, creating pressure through repeated attacks and chances. These phases often coincide with goals, major chances, or forced defensive errors.

Lower Momentum values suggest the opposite: limited attacking output, difficulty progressing the ball, or sustained defensive phases. Over time, these patterns help clarify which team is controlling the flow of the match.

This makes momentum especially useful for identifying:

  • Shifts in control
  • Sustained pressure phases
  • Periods where one team is being pinned back

How Momentum is calculated

Momentum is calculated dynamically using several live inputs, including:

  • Attacks and dangerous attacks
  • Shots and shot pressure
  • Ball possession and territorial control

Values are recalculated continuously based on the most recent 10 minutes of play, ensuring the metric reflects current match conditions rather than historical averages.

Reading the Momentum chart

The Momentum chart visualises pressure over time for both teams, making it easier to connect match events with shifts in control.

  • Higher values indicate stronger and more sustained attacking phases.
  • Sharp rises or drops often follow key events such as goals, cards, or tactical changes.
  • Goal markers appear as circles on the chart, helping you correlate goals with pressure trends.

There is no fixed upper limit to Momentum. Values above 100 are rare and usually indicate a prolonged period of heavy dominance by one team.
